One of the most enjoyable aspects of making things and tinkering is sharing the creative process with others. I enjoy mentoring my children, often posing the question of "I wonder what makes this work?" to get them thinking about the inner workings and turning those revelations into creating something unique.
At their school fundraising events I offer a "Tinkering with Casey" day as an auction item. I'll typically talk to the child about what interests them and together we come up with a project that engages their interests, leaving them with new insights and feeling empowered to create things on their own.
These workshops are immensely fun. The hours fly by and at the end of the day we have a newly completed project they can take home and show off. The projects usually consist of "kit bashing" and repurposing old and broken toys. We've turned remote control cars into RC boats and created a fancy lighted display for collectable figures complete with hydraulic actuation.
